The twin STEREO spacecraft (called Behind and Ahead denoting their relative positions in space), now almost 120 degrees apart, captured this large and dramatic prominence eruption over about a 30-hour period between Sept. 26-27, 2009. Prominences, called filaments when they are viewed against the surface of the Sun, are clouds of cooler gas suspended above the Suns surface by magnetic forces. This More.. erupting prominence was large enough that both spacecraft were able to observe it for hours on end, one of the first times that has occurred.

From the Behind perspective (on left) the long filament, darker than the Suns surface, can be seen rising up and then breaking away, spreading out above most of the Suns surface. As seen from the Ahead spacecraft (right), the filament is seen in profile and is therefore called a prominence. The very large cloud lifts up, breaks away, and heads out into space. This is one of the most spectacular eruptive prominences either SOHO or STEREO have observed.

The United States remains the world's largest manufacturing nation even as China gains ground, according to a new study.

The survey released Tuesday by the US-based Manufacturing Institute with the Manufacturers Alliance showed that the US share of global manufacturing value has held at 22 percent in 2008, roughly the same level for nearly 30 years.
China's share last year was 14 percent, continuing a surge from its 1980 level of just two percent, according to the study using data from the United Nations, International Monetary Fund and other sources.

This film shows the process of welding a large piece of metal before the advent of the industrial electric welder. Note the foreman overseeing the work. Check out the muscles on those guys, the average weekly wage for such hard labor was $3 to $5. This film was made at the Westinghouse plant where electric generators were made.

Accidents were probably plentiful - none seem to wearing gloves or More.. eye protection of any sort.

A group of men weld one area of the large ring in a fire. They lift the ring, which is hanging on chains, out of the fire. Four men hammer the hot area into shape while the remaining men hold it. They put the ring into the fire again, take it out, and over to a machine which hammers down on that area of the ring. They then take it away from the machine and hammer it themselves into shape. The ring is presumably a piece of a generator.

This looks like Really Hard Work
